Thanksgiving Day 2009
Happy Thanksgiving!
I think every blogger out there has written some sort of “what I’m thankful” for post in the past few days. With Thanksgiving Day already started, I thought maybe I’d try to skip a list post of all the great things in my life and just talk about the day itself. I love Thanksgiving. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and my wife and friends all around. What more could I ask for? I love the whole process of preparing for Thanksgiving – the shopping, the cutting, the dicing, the brining of the turkey the night before…it’s all a bit like Christmas morning for me. I feel a certain amount of excitement.
My wife’s first trip to America (she’s English) to see me was for Thanksgiving at my parent’s house in Pittsburgh, PA. That year was the coldest Thanksgiving I have ever experienced. My wife was frozen to the core and couldn’t believe someone would choose to live in such miserable conditions. Even my family thought it was too cold and we were all used to it (although at the time I lived in Los Angeles, so I was a bit of a wimp about it). She loved Thanksgiving and now enjoys it as much as I do. Many years, we’ve been in charge of those who didn’t have family to go home to. In Los Angeles, I had a lot of friends from PA, so they would all come over and celebrate with us. We usually had around 12-14 people at our table and I loved it.
This year won’t be quite that packed, but we do have a guest in San Antonio this week. Our friend, Charley, is from England and will be experiencing her first Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, that means the pressure’s on. I can’t wait to see what she thinks of the classic green bean casserole. I even used it as an excuse to have pumpkin pie (my wife isn’t a huge fan). After dinner, some friends plan on stopping by for the evening. We’ll probably have a few beers and play some games. Basically, it sounds like the perfect day to me.
Hope you all have a wonderful day and I’ll see you soon!
The photo used for this post is of my cat, Molly, who passed away last year. She was an awesome cat and absolutely loved turkey.
