Social Media – Fad or Revolution?

By rerockstar • August 21st, 2009

You may have seen this already.

The following video has been passing around the internet since earlier this summer, but I recently saw it on Jay Thompson’s blog, The Phoenix Real Estate Guy and thought I’d share it with anyone who may not have seen it yet. It’s definitely an interesting look at how social media is evolving with generations young and old. I personally think social media has become a part of human interaction. I have plenty of clients and friends who interact with me first on the social media level. Taking it to the personal, face to face level comes afterward. People tend to let their guard down on the internet (a whole field of psychology to be looked at) and because of that, you can really get a glimpse of “who they are.” The people who polish and craft their internet identity (in a false sense) are typically passed over by the social media types.

Social media seems to me to be bringing about a new level of customer interaction from businesses. Where once only the brand mattered, it is becoming more about the people who buy the products and services. As the video points out, bad customer service can be repeated instantly and spread like wildfire. As social media grows, there will be growing pains, problems, and spammers (there’s plenty of those already), but as it works out the kinks, I think it is poised to become the next step in communication for a world that has become increasingly global in nature.

Let me know what you think on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, ActiveRain, Placeblogger, Trulia, or LinkedIn.

That is, by far, one of the best videos I’ve ever seen regarding social media.

I only wish I had put it together. Everyone seems to love this video. Definitely will make some people think about social media who might not have considered it before.

This is my favorite social media video to date! I went out and picked up a copy of Socialnomics, the book the video is based on. I haven’t started reading it just yet but I’m sure I’ll get to it at some point over the weekend..;.

Ricardo – You’ll have to let me know how the book goes. I love these sorts of videos – they give me some info and leave it to you to dwell on it and come to a conclusion.

Awesome information .. I was working on an article on Why social media in this economic climate.. Thanks, the music was hot also.

Kim – This video spread like wildfire over the internet, especially amongst real estate professionals. I think it says a lot about social media – where it is and where it is heading. Of course, I can’t take credit for any of it, as I didn’t put the video together, only blogged about it.
